SAN FRANCISCO, CA Monday Mar.13.2006 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- For their efforts to promote political awareness, Green Day and Death Cab For Cutie were honored last week at Music For America's (MFA) annual Icon Awards ceremony.

The event, which took place Thursday night, pays tribute to public figures who promote social responsibility and political involvement.

MFA honored Green Day for "continuing to educate their fan base about current political issues and not hesitating to speak out against the current administration."

Besides addressing social matters on the band's multi-platinum album "American Idiot," Green Day also helped educate and register fans to vote by inviting MFA along for both legs of the band's US tour.

Death Cab For Cutie was also honored for "getting politically active early in 2004 and carrying on the momentum with their millions of fans in [a] non-national election year, 2005."

Death Cab For Cutie has taken MFA along on several tours to promote voter registration and education. The band also took part in 2004's "Vote For Change Tour."

Other MFA Icon Award honorees included San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Youth Movement Records, and the company Working Assets.
